EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team continued play at the Spartan Invitational Saturday, posting a perfect 4-0 singles record and splitting their doubles matches.
"We had a very strong day in both singles and doubles, which was great to see from this group," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Everyone played with great focus today and really concentrated on what we needed to do in order to pick up the victories. Going 4-0 in singles play was awesome, and hopefully we can continue this momentum tomorrow as we close out the tournament."
Princess Gbadamosi and Kara Sherwood each picked up their singles wins in the A Singles Flight, Gbadamosi earning a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory over Emily Mazzola of Toledo, and Sherwood earning a three-set victory over Toledo's Pia Rygh (6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5)).
Victoria Bensimon earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over a strong opponent from Wisconsin in the B Flight, while Ellen Folkers continued her excellent weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Emmy Virkus of Michigan State in the C Flight. Folkers is now 3-0 on the weekend in singles play, with all three victories coming over MSU opponents.
Both doubles teams in action today dropped their opening matches, but rebounded to earn strong victories in their consolation brackets. Gbadamosi and Bensimon, who were down 7-2 at one point, came back to earn a 9-7 victory over a Michigan State duo in the A bracket, while Mathilde Orange and Sherwood posted an 8-5 victory in the B Bracket - also over an MSU tandem.
The Vikings will wrap up action at the Spartan Invitational Sunday morning, with action beginning at 9:00 a.m.
