ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team continued play at the Cornell Fall Invitational Saturday, with Ellen Folkers leading the way as she advanced to the championship match of the C Singles Flight.
"Overall we didn't do as well as I would have liked today, but we definitely had some stand out performances from Ellen, Mathilde and the doubles team of Lauren and Kara," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Ellen is our lone singles player still alive in the main draw and she has been playing some good tennis this weekend and is starting to kick it in to gear after getting off to a rough start this season. Mathilde was able to come away with two victories today after losing her first match yesterday, and it was really exciting to see her pick up her play and pull out a pair of wins today. She is starting to get back to where she left off last season and will soon be playing at a high level."
After winning her opening round match yesterday, Folkers picked up two more wins today in the C Flight, and will now face Akron's Madison Cohen in the championship match tomorrow. Folkers picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Caroline Harpaintner of Akron in the quarterfinals and then posted a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (4) victory over Albany's Paulina Torres in the semifinals.
In doubles action, the duo of Lauren Golick and Kara Sherwood split their matches in the A Flight Saturday, earning a 9-7 win over a duo from Cornell and then falling to another Cornell tandem, 8-3. Golick and Sherwood will now face Dena Tanenbaum and Laila Judeh, also from Cornell, in a third-place match tomorrow morning.
"Lauren and Kara were able to put together some nice matches today, and we will see if they can continue that high level of play tomorrow and get another doubles win for us. They are really playing some solid tennis right now which is good to see at such an early time in the fall season," Etzkin said.
The Vikings also went 5-0 in singles consolation matches and 2-0 in doubles consolation matches Saturday. Picking up singles wins were Sherwood, Golick, Princess Gbadamosi and Mathilde Orange, with Orange still alive in the B Flight Consolation Bracket.
"Overall we are 8-4 in tiebreakers, which really turns a good tournament into a great tournament for us. We have done well in pressure situations and I am looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully having another positive day on the courts," Etzkin said.
The final day of the Cornell Fall Invitational will start at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning (Sunday, Sept. 15), with the finals and consolation matches of all singles and doubles flights.
