#HLSD Diving Competition Concludes on Tuesday

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The diving portion of the Horizon League swimming and diving championships concluded on Tuesday on the campus of IUPUI.

"What are divers did these past two days were simply put remarkable," said swimming and diving head coach Hannah Burandt. "All of the credit goes to our athletes and Rich Karban. He bleeds grean. Rich truly cares about each and every one of our athletes and always puts them first. He's an incredible teacher, leader and coach. We're so lucky to have him here at Cleveland State." 

Matt Akers, who finished first place on Monday in the 1-meter diving championship, took the third spot on Tuesday in the 3-meter diving. Fellow Viking Trevor Mahoney also qualified for the finals, finishing eighth.

Akers scored 297.50 in the final after putting up a score of 281.00 in the preliminary round. Mahoney notched a 276.00 in the prelim and a 262.00 in the final.

Michael Slaughter finished ninth in the preliminary round with a score of 227.00, while placing fourth in the consolation round, scoring 199.65.

"I'm extremely proud of all of our divers," said Burandt. "This year's format was very different than in years past, but they handled it was courage, bravery and poise. It was a ton of fun. It was an amazing couple of days and they set the standards high for our swimmers."

The women, who dove off of the 3-meter boards on Monday competed in the 1-meter championship in the final day of the two-day event on Tuesday.

Erica Henrichsen, who placed fourth on Monday, notched a preliminary score of 198.40, good for ninth place, while energy captain Maggie Micko tallied a prelim score of 182.20. Both Henrichsen and Micko competed in the consolation round, placing third (220.50) and fifth (171.35), respectively.

Tuesday's event concluded the diving portion of the 2021 #HLSD Championships, as the swimming events are up next.

"This was so much fun," Burandt said. "For me to get this quality time with our divers was amazing. This is the most amount of time I've spent with them in-person and we had a great time. It was super important for me to be here and support them, but also to show trust and faith in Ben (Colley) and Pieter (Ritz) and in our program back home to do what they need to do to get themselves ready for the rest of the week. Bring on the swimming competition!"

The 2021 #HLSD Championships return with the swimming competition on Thursday, April 8. Preliminaries will start at 9:15 a.m. ET and final competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET. Both sections will be streamed on ESPN3. Visit our #HLSD Championship Central for more.
