CSU Men, Women Finish Second at HL Championships

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams both claimed runner-up finishes as the Vikings concluded action in the Horizon League Championships Saturday at the Oakland Aquatic Center.

The CSU men posted 633 points while the women tallied 594 for the meet.

The Viking men, who saw Dominik Niedzialek end Saturday with a new school record, finished among the top two teams at the meet for the eighth time in nine years.

However, this week's meet represented the best conference meet for the Viking women in recent times. The CSU women were runners-up for the first time since 2013 while their point total was also the highest by a female Viking squad at the HL Championships in seven years.

The best individual event of the final day for the women was the 200 backstroke as four Vikings placed among the top 10.

Sophomore Agnes Bahr led the way in sixth in 2:02.89, after she had reset her personal best in prelims, while junior Sule van der Merwe was seventh in 2:04.17. Senior Chuchu Yang won the consolation final in 2:03.67 while freshman Caroline Hughes finished right behind Yang in 2:03.82. Both Yang and Hughes reset their personal bests Saturday with Hughes moving into the all-time top-10 in the event.

The Vikings had the same finishes in the 100 free and 1650 free, in terms of placing.

Senior Gabriella Marinelli was fourth in the 100 (51.13) while junior Irena Weclawiak was seventh (51.79) and senior Lauren Frank was 11th (52.11), both in new personal bests.

Junior Lexie Kostelnik led the way in the mile by taking fourth in 17:06.11. Freshman Rachel Contich was seventh (17:20.53) while Hughes was 11th (17:36.85).

Juniors Libby Smith and Alana Cartwright finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the women's 200 breaststroke in 2:19.90 and 2:21.19. Cartwright reset her personal best in prelims while classmate Gracyn McQueary also scored in the event for CSU by touching the wall in 2:28.18.

Sophomore Stephanie Sipple placed seventh for CSU in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.80.

For the fourth time in the meet, a CSU women's relay outpaced its seed entering the race. The Viking women took third in the 400 freestyle relay as Weclawiak, Marinelli, Frank and senior Madi Jaszcz finished in 3:25.09, becoming the fifth-fastest quartet in program history.

Two different Viking men broke the school record in the 200 backstroke Saturday.

Junior Timothy Kubacki broke the program standard in prelims before Niedzialek took the record back hours later in finals.

Niedzialek, who won the 100 back Friday, finished as the runner-up in the 200 back in his new record time of 1:43.19. He surpassed the NCAA B standard by 1.85 seconds and reset his personal best entering the day by 1.79 seconds.

Kubacki, who won a pair of individual titles in the meet, took fourth in the 200 back in 1:45.06. He posted a B cut in prelims and beat his personal best entering the day by over two seconds.

Freshman Nathen Eberhardt won the 200 back consolation final in 1:46.89, as he beat his personal best entering the day by over three seconds. Senior Austin Spruill also scored in the event for CSU, finishing in 1:52.88 after notching a personal best in prelims.

Senior Dominic Poletta fell just shy of a perfect 3-for-3 individual showing. After winning individual titles Thursday and Friday, he took third in the 100 freestyle in 44.40 seconds. Senior DJ Arslanian was 10th (45.33) while junior Ryan Sedlak was 11th (45.50) after the latter set a personal best in prelims.

Three Vikings each scored in the men's 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly.

Sophomore Jack Krusinski led the way in the breaststroke as he took third in a personal best 1:59.06. Senior Tyler Stevenson took seventh (2:03.76) while junior Josh Hodges finished in 16th (2:07.67).

Senior Matthew Martin was the top Viking man in the fly. He took fifth in 1:48.23 after posting a career best in prelims. Sophomore Bob Lenart won the consolation final (1:50.34) while senior Sam Sawyer took 16th (1:58.63) as both reset personal bests on the day.

Junior Alec Bowie took 12th in the 1650 freestyle in 16:08.51.

Poletta, Arslanian, Sedlak and senior Jack MacDonald finished as runners-up in the final event of the Championships—the 400 freestyle relay. They finished in 2:57.00 to become the second-fastest quartet in CSU history.

Cleveland State will host the National Invitational Championship March 12-14. The Vikings have also qualified multiple individuals to the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, which will take place at the same time at the University of Kentucky.
