CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior Molly McNamara broke the school record in the 200 IM, and a trio of Viking freshmen posted top three individual finishes as the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving programs hosted the second day of the Horizon League Championships Thursday inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

McNamara took it upon herself to post the third school record time by CSU women's swimming on just the second day of the Championships. She took third in 2:01.94, topping the prior program standard by .89 seconds and her prior personal best by over 1.25 seconds. She was less than a half second off of the NCAA 'B' cut time.

Freshman Alana Cartwright was sixth in the 200 IM in 2:04.44 after posting a new personal best by over two seconds in the prelims. Junior Claudia Zido won the consolation final in 2:04.72, better than three seconds over her personal best entering the day.

Freshman Matt Akers had quite a debut League Championships performance, taking runner-up honors in the 1-meter event with a NCAA qualifying score of 301.90. He scored 52+ points on three dives and 48+ points on five dives. His best was an inward 2.5 somersault tuck that earned 55.80 points.

Fellow freshman Trevor Mahoney won the consolation final with a season best 250.15 points while junior Curtis Roden took 16th overall with 189.30.

Junior Jared Stergar joined Akers in posting a NCAA qualifying mark Thursday and just missed pulling off a comeback for the ages in the 200 IM. He trailed the leader by 2.25 seconds at the halfway point but rallied furiously in the back half, splitting 29.74 on the third leg, to close the gap. He would take second place in 1:47.82, just .06 seconds off the pace. He was more than a second under the B standard, making him the second fastest performer in program history. Stergar was seeded 14th entering the event.

Junior Tyler Stevenson was seventh in the 200 IM in 1:51.14 after he had topped his personal best by over two seconds in the prelims. Junior Addison Kaufmann and freshman Timothy Kubacki finished 12th and 13th, respectively. Kaufmann stopped the clock in a new personal best 1:51.81 and Kubacki finished in 1:51.89 after posting a PR in prelims.

Freshman Dominik Niedzialek had a lead for much of the race in the 500 freestlye but ended up taking third in 4:25.45, less than a second off the school record. He was one of three Vikings in the top six as juniors Erwan Mahoudo and Jason van der Touw were fourth and sixth, respectively, in 4:26.70 and 4:28.83. Mahoudo's time was a personal best by nearly two seconds. Freshman Lee Moffett was 14th in 4:34.47.

Like her rookie counterpart, freshman Lexie Kostelnik also took third in the women's 500 freestyle despite being seeded 14th entering the event. Her time of 4:54.28 was more than seven seconds faster than her personal best entering the day and made her the third fastest performer in program history. Sophomore Gabriella Marinelli won the consolation final in 4:56.66, more than four seconds better than her personal best.

Marinelli also tied her personal best in the 50 free with her lead split (23.75) in the 200 free relay. She was followed by senior Jamie VanDewerker, junior Ashleigh Bennett and sophomore Meghan Bobick as the quartet took fourth in 1:34.22.

VanDewerker was fifth in the 50 freestyle in 23.71 seconds after posting a new personal best in the prelims. Bobick took 16th place (24.18) after being seeded 25th entering the event.

Sophomore DJ Arslanian matched VanDewerker's effort on the men's side, taking fifth in the 50 free in 20.40 seconds. Junior Sean Mulvin won the consolation final in 20.72, after missing the championship final by just .01 seconds. Both Arslanian and Mulvin broke their PR's by over a half second in prelims.

Arslanian and Mulvin formed the front half of CSU's 200 free relay team and were followed by Stevenson and sophomore Jack MacDonald. The group took third in 1:20.59.

Cartwright and Zido became the third and fourth fastest performers in program history in the 200 IM while VanDewerker became the fourth fastest performer in the 50 free.

Niedzialek, Mahoudo and van der Touw all moved into the top six fastest performers in the 500 free. Arslanian became the seventh fastest performer in the 50 free.

The Cleveland State men sit in second place with 241 points, 44.5 points behind Oakland. The Viking women jumped three spots and are in third with 185 points.

The Championships continues Friday with five individual swimming events per gender, women's 1-meter diving and the 400 medley relay.
