Turk Sets School Record on Day One in 1,000 Freestyle

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team had a strong showing on day one of the 2014 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships.  CSU is currently in third place with a score of 104 points heading into day two.  CSU competed in four finals events in the 200 free relay, 1,000 free, men's 3-meter diving, and the 200 medley relay.

Sophomore Jodi Turk finished fifth, but set a school record in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:17.30.

The Vikings tied in the 200 free relay with Milwaukee for first with a quick time of 1:32.72.  Cleveland State's relay team was lead by Alex Johansson, Christine Kopacko, Amanda Pallija, and Rowan Elbadry.   In the 200 medley relay CSU finished third with a time of 1:43.45.  The relay team was led by Hayley Smith, Madisen Tretter, Alex Johansson, and Christine Kopacko.

Head Coach Wally Morton spoke about the women's performance after day one. "Our women in the 200 free relay performances were extraordinary.  We tied for first, but really it's a team that has not been highly ranked throughout the season and they really put it together, especially Rowan Elbadry with her split of 22 plus in the 200 free relay.  We were very consistent throughout.  Everybody was 23 in their splits and Rowan's 22 at the end was tremendous," said Morton.

He added, "In the 1,000 freestyle, really excited for Jodi Turk setting the school record in the 1,000 with a fourth place finish and Beth Robertson was I believe in sixth or seventh.  She was just a bit off of the school record.  We had solid swims from all of our women in the 1,000 free.  But, Jodi setting the school record and Beth almost setting the school record with a seventh place finish were both outstanding swims. The women really came back in the 200 medley relay in terms of the finish.  Christine Kopacko had a 22.92 and was a terrific swim.  Overall, some very fast swimming on the back end by Alex Johansson and Christine, and ending up with a third place finish.  It was outstanding.  It was a very fun day of swimming.  I think we are where we thought we would be based on what everyone else has and what we have.  Friday and Saturday it really picks up."

Cleveland State will be back in the pool tomorrow morning, beginning with swimming prelims at 10:00 a.m. Swimming and diving finals will then begin at 5:30 p.m.
