Vikings Finish Ahead of Xavier

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich.-  The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team defeated Xavier 201-93, but didn't fare as well against Oakland, losing 166-127 on Saturday afternoon at Oakland.

The Vikings (8-5, 2-2 HL) had first place finishes by sophomore Jodi Turk (1,000 free), Rowan Elbadry (200 free and 50 free), and CSU won the 400 freestyle relay.  Leading the race to the finish were Elbadry, Kopacko, Pallija, and Johansson.  Turk's wall touch in the 1,000 freestyle was a top time of 10:31.36.  Along with a first place finish, Turk earned a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle and in the 200 IM.  Her time came out to 5:09.08 in the 500 freestyle and 2:17.05 in the 200 IM. 

Elbadry had another fantastic meet for CSU.  Her time in the 200 freestyle was 1:52.72, and in the 50 freestyle a quick time of 24.13.  In the 400 freestyle relay Cleveland State finished out with a time of 3:33.32.  She also took second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.34.   

Head Coach Wally Morton had his thoughts on how the meet went today. "After a tough trip coming up due to the weather conditions, our team swam very well and had some outstanding performances.  We are looking forward to facing another conference opponent in UIC," said Morton.

Other key contributors that made a big impact in the pool were Sammie Sposet who finished second in the 1-meter dive (245.85) and 3-meter dive (230.78).  Alex Johansson had an excellent day in the pool taking second in the 50 yard freestyle (24.80) and finished third in the 100 butterfly (59.43).  Christine Kopacko had a solid third place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.83).  Junior Hayley Smith continues to have strong performances in the pool, as she finished third the 200 backstroke (2:08.86).    

The Vikings will return home for their final regular season meet of the season as CSU will host conference opponent UIC on Saturday (Feb.1).  Swimming and diving events will begin at noon.
