Vikings Swim a Consistent Second

CLEVELAND, Ohio-  The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team held on to second all three days during the Magnus Cup.  The Vikings finished out with 1,179.5 points.

On the final day of the finals, the Vikings started the first event swimming in 1,650 yard freestyle.  Jodi Turk represented CSU who began the day, finishing third with a time of 17:32.73.  Senior Alex Johansson finished first with a fast time of 25.06 in the 50 yard butterfly.  In the 200 yard breast Madisen Tretter finished third with a time of 2:17.74. Meghan Miller finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.55.  The Vikings finished third in the 400 yard Freestyle Relay.  Cleveland State was led by Johansson, Elbadry, McConnell, and Kopacko.

Head Coach Wally Morton had his final day thoughts on the women taking runner-up.  "We had a good day learning about our team.  Both teams had strong runner-up finishes.  The men were just inched out.  It came down to the last two events, very similar to how we won the conference last year.  We still swam extremely well," said Morton.

"Alex Johansson is continuing to swim well and won multiple events and showed great senior leadership.  I liked the way how she approached the weekend and how she prepared.  Another senior that stepped up was Christine Kopacko.  She stepped up to have a really outstanding meet.  On the freshman side, Madisen Tretter broke the 200 breast school record by two seconds, which was held by Alice Sommerville," said a pleased Morton.

"I want to commend my assistant coaches.  Kate Inozemtseva has done a wonderful job with Tretter.  She gets Tretter better every day in practice. The team from top to bottom had great times.  We do a ritual where we do claps for best times.  Most of the swimmers had multiple best times. Most of the swimmers had multiple best times. We have a long way to go, but are making progress, and happy Thanksgiving to everybody."

CSU will be back in the pool on Tuesday (Dec. 3) as the Vikings will host Canisus, John Carroll, Case Western, and Notre Dame College (Ohio).  Swimming and diving will begin at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
