Woman Remain in Second Heading into Sunday

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team continued to have strong showings in the swimming events on day two of the Second Annual Magnus Cup.  The Vikings upped their score to 805 points.

CSU on the day between the men and women, three meet records.  The records were held by Alex Lewis, Adam Ingledew, and Madisen Tretter.

On day two of the swimming finals, the Vikings started the evening swimming in the 200 Medley Relay.  CSU took second with Hayley Smith, Madisen Tretter, Alex Johansson, and Christine Kopacko leading the charge.  Cleveland State timed out at 1:45.71. Johansson took first in the 100 butterfly with a top time of 56.43. Tretter finished first in the 100 breast with a wall touch meet record of 1:03.39.  The Vikings finished fourth in the 800 Freestyle Relay with a time of 7:44.89.  Cleveland State was led by Kopacko, Pallija, McConnell, and Elbadry.

On day two of the finals, the women's diving team competed in the 3-meter dive.  The Vikings were led by Sammie Sposet, Kathleen Chandler, and Alex DiMasso.  CSU finished all in a row with Sposet taking second with a score of 235.10 for the second day in a row.  Chandler finished third with a score of 232.80, and Dimasso took fourth with a score of 226.85.

Head Diving Coach Rich Karban was very pleased through the two days on how their divers performed.  "As a whole I thought the divers were pretty consistent.  The scores were pretty similar from contest to contest.  I think they came back strong and did a nice job in the finals.  As a whole it gives me a pretty good check-in to see where they are at in their development. It gives us a good way to know where we have to be moving forward," said Karban.

"Sammie Sposet in particular finished second both in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive.  She did some new dives to try to work through some of the anxiety on her shoulders.  We are getting better, more consistent.  The seniors Kathleen (Chandler) and Alex (DiMasso) both did a nice job as well competing in their dives," said a happy Karban.

Head Coach Wally Morton had his thoughts on how his Vikings performed in the pool on day two of the Magnus Cup.  "I was really pleased with the continuing development of our team.  We had some great wins tonight.  Alex Johansson impressively won the 100 butterfly, which was a terrific swim," said Morton. "The person who has really been a big surprise for us is Madisen Tretter.  Tretter has already qualified for the U.S. National Championships by winning the 100 breast with really an outstanding time.  She is ultimately on track to get her school record if she continues her development.  Every time she swims, she gets faster."

"We are swimming our team in multiple events and as we go along, this is not just a competition, but it's a training exercise on how they can best take care of themselves and perform at a very high level.  I am very thrilled that our new 20 swimmers are swimming at a high level to this point of the season," said a pleased Morton.

The Vikings will finish out the final day of the Magnus Cup tomorrow with prelims beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the finals will begin at 3:00 p.m. The 1,650 freestyle final will begin at 1:00 p.m.
