SETTING THE SCENE:

  • The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team will be in action this week on Friday (Oct. 18) 5:00 p.m., as they travel to Youngstown State to open up the 2013-14 swimming and diving dual meet season.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK:

Men - Placed 4th at Dennis Stark Relays 

Women-  Placed 5th at Dennis Stark Relays

  • Expectations and goals for the Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team are as high as ever in 2013-14.
  • Senior, Alex Lewis led the way in the 200 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, 3x 100 butterfly, the 200 medley relay, and the 400 freestyle relay.
  • For the women, two freshman that had solid showings were Rowan Elbadry and Meghan Miller.

FAB FRESHMAN:

  • Incoming freshmen standouts who will help contribute are Rowan Elbadry.  She will compete in the freestyle and butterfly events.
  • Ally McConnell and Megan Miller will swim in the butterfly events (100 and 200 fly).
  • Elbadry and Miller both swam well in their relay events at the Dennis Stark Relays.
  • Dayna Kiekebosch will swim in the breastroke events for Cleveland State.
  • Adriana Cannon will compete in the butterfly sprint and the 200 butterfly for the Vikings.
  • Miranda Martinez will swim in the freestyle and backstroke events for CSU.
  • Madisen Tretter will compete in the 100 breastroke and 100 freestyle.
  • Tara Vermandere will get a chance to swim in the breastroke and IM events.

PREVIEWING THE WOMEN:

  • The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team is coming off a 12-4 finish in 2012-13, and are ready to continue the program's rise toward the top of the Horizon League in 2013-14.
  • The Viking returners this season are a record-breaking bunch.

SENIOR LEADERS:

  • The women will be anchored by Alex Johansson, Christine Kopako, Nikki Kolis, Hannah Morris, Amanda Pallija, and Ashley Rossi.
  • Johansson won the 100 freestyle, and 100 fly at the League Championships.
  • Kopako will return to the pool, who will compete in the sprint events.  She had the top time in the 200 free last year at the Viking College Invite with a time of (1:53.06).
  • Senior Nikki Kolis set a school record in the 1,650 yard freestyle last year, with a time of 17:19.33.
  • Hannah Morris had the second best time in the 200 backstroke (2:07.99) at last year's Horizon League Championships.
  • Amanda Pallija will be another key contributing senior for the Vikings.  Pallija had the fourth best time in the 200 freestyle at the Horizon League Championships.
  • Ashley Rossi will swim in the distance and backstroke events for the Vikings this season for Coach Morton.

SOPHOMORE EXCELLENCE:

  • Sophomore Jodi Turk is another top returner for the Vikings who had a great freshmen year. Turk will be swimming in the distance events.

PREVIEWING THE MEN:

  • The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team are entering the 2013-14 season as the defending Horizon League Champions from a year ago.
  • The Vikings went 12-3-1 last season, looking to improve.  CSU at one point, won seven of their last 10 dual meets.

FIVE STAR SENIORS:

  • The men will be anchored by an outstanding core group of seniors led by Al Shillito, Alex Lewis, Brian Ferro, and Justin Kermack.
  • Al Shillito was one of the top swimmers in the Horizon League, earning Horizon League Athlete of the Year accolades.

UP NEXT:

  • The men and women will be back in action for their first home meet of the year against Green Bay at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Saturday (Oct. 26) at noon.
