Cleveland State Softball Takes Series Finale at Robert Morris

Moon Township, PA-The Cleveland State softball team defeated Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 6-2. The Vikings rebounded to take the series finale and avoid a weekend sweep after RMU took the first two games of the series in a doubleheader on Saturday. Cleveland State improves to 11-7 in the Horizon League standings with six conference games remaining.

Cleveland State did all of its scoring in the second and third innings. The Vikings posted five runs in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. A sacrifice fly from Sophie Spellman gave Cleveland State its first run and Kylie Gorsuch reached on a throwing error which brought home the second run. Brooke Albaugh would later supply the big blow as she struck a three-run home run to put Cleveland State up 5-0. The home run was Albaugh's second of the season.

RMU's Courtney Poulich answered with a home run of her own in the bottom of the second which cut the Cleveland State lead to two. The Vikings answered by loading the bases in the third inning and Peyton Mueller-Stenz drew a bases loaded walk to push home another run and make it 6-2.

Cleveland State held the Colonials scoreless the rest of the way as Melissa Holzopfel scattered four hits through the remaining five innings. Holzopfel went all seven innings and struck out three for her 12th win of the season.

Cleveland State returns home for four games at Viking Field this week. The Vikings will play host to Kent State on Tuesday in a recently added non-league game. Conference play resumes when Youngstown State comes to town for a three-game series starting on Friday afternoon.
