Cleveland State Softball Drops Two at Robert Morris

Moon Township, PA-The Cleveland State softball team fell in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Robert Morris. Both games were tight throughout with RMU collecting key hits late to surge ahead. The Colonials won game one 7-4 and prevailed 5-1 in game two. RMU improves to 9-8 in the Horizon League with the victories while Cleveland State drops to 10-7 in league play. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series tomorrow with a noon start.

Game One

Cleveland State took an early lead as Melissa Holzopfel connected on a two-RBI single through the left side, scoring Brooke Albaugh and Kiera Frascone to make it 2-0 CSU in the top of the third.

RMU responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to grab the advantage. A double and a single each scored two runs to give the Colonials a 4-2 edge. The Vikings fought back to tie the score at 4 after RBI hits from Kylie Gorsuch in the fourth and Peyton Mueller Stenz in the sixth.

RMU pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth as the last of three Cleveland State errors in the first game proved to be a costly one. A throwing error on a ground ball to second base allowed one run to score, and a two-RBI single from RMU's Jess Matheny made it 7-4. The Vikings could not push a run across in the seventh giving RMU the three-run victory.

Game Two

The game was a pitcher's duel for most of the afternoon as CSU's Torrie Jenkins and RMU's Kaitlyn Molitoris kept the game at a 1-1 tie through the middle of the fifth inning. RMU struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-RBI triple from Courtney Poulich to take a 3-1 lead.

The Colonials scored two more in the sixth on a wild pitch and an infield single to widen the margin to four runs. Cleveland State was unable to mount an offensive threat as the Vikings finished with six total hits in the second game.
