Cleveland State Softball Splits Two in First Action in Hawaii

Honolulu, HI-The Cleveland State softball team finally took the field for the first time at the Outrigger Rainbow Wahine Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii. Following a rainout on the opening day of the tournament, the Vikings split two games on day two, falling in the opener to UConn 4-2 before defeating New Mexico 3-1 in the second game of the day.

Cleveland State took an early lead in the second game in the third inning. Brooke Albaugh was hit by a pitch with one out. Melissa Holzopfel followed with a double which scored Albaugh all the way from first base to put Cleveland State in front. Becky Hurosky followed with a single to score Holzopfel to make it 2-0 Vikings.

Holzopfel collected her second double and second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth, as she once again doubled home Albaugh to make it 3-0.

She helped her own cause in the circle, as Holzopfel went the distance for the win. She struck out four and yielded just a single unearned run over seven innings of work.

In the first game of the day, UConn tallied all four of its runs in the first three innings to open up an early lead. The Vikings mustered just two hits offensively and were unable to erase the deficit in falling 4-2.
