Cleveland State Softball Splits Two on Final Day at NC State Wolfpack Classic

Raleigh, NC-The Cleveland State softball team split its final two games at the NC State Wolfpack Classic on Sunday. The Vikings defeated Iona 3-1 in the opening game of the day before falling to Appalachian State 8-1 in the second game.

In the opener against Iona, Kylie Gorsuch drove in two of the three runs for the Vikings and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Melissa Holzopfel fired a complete game yielding just one run in earning the win in the circle.

Gorsuch knocked in the first run with a single to left field in the third inning to score Jenna Deang. Following an Iona home run in the fourth to tie the game at one, the Vikings responded with two runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead back. Jenna Deang reached on an error scoring Holzopfel, and then Gorsuch delivered again with an RBi single to score Sophie Spellman.

Holzopfel held Iona scoreless the rest of the way to close out the victory. She struck out ten batters and walked just one while yielding only three hits.

In the second game of the day, Appalachian State scored seven runs in the third and fourth inning combined to pull away for the 8-1 win.

Cleveland State returns to action next week with a trip to Hawaii for the Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament starting on Wednesday, March 6. Cleveland State is scheduled to play a total of eight games throughout the trip.
