Cleveland State Softball Splits Doubleheader with Green Bay

Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State softball team split a doubleheader with Green Bay on Friday afternoon at Viking Field. Cleveland State won the first game with a late rally 4-2 and fell in the second game 7-3. The two teams will play again tomorrow at noon in the final game of the series.

Cleveland State scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings loaded the bases with one out on the strength of a single and two walks and Melissa Holzopfel brought home the run with a fielder's choice ground ball. The game was tied at 1 through the first inning.

The Vikings struck again in the second inning as Sophie Spellman drew a walk and advanced to second on a ground ball. Jenna Deang then delivered a two-out RBI single to put Cleveland State in front 2-1.

The two teams were scoreless until the sixth, when Green Bay scratched across a run to tie the game up at two. The Vikings responded in the bottom half of the inning. Melissa Holzopfel led off with a single and two batters later Emma Gilkerson followed with another single to left field. Holzopfel turned to head to third and the relay throw from left field was wide, allowing her to score and Gilkerson to advance to second base.

Emily Yacapraro came in to pinch run for Gilkerson and took third base on a wild pitch. Sophie Spellman dropped a bunt down the third base line and Yacapraro smartly read the throw to first base and scampered home just under the tag for the fourth run of the game.

In the second game Green Bay tallied three in the second and two in the third to take a 5-0 lead. The Viking offense could muster only four hits as Green Bay secured a 7-3 win.

Tomorrow's game will be a noon first pitch and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
