Cleveland State Softball Downs Detroit Mercy in Series Opener

Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State softball team picked up its third win in four games in taking the opener of a three-game series from Detroit Mercy 3-0 Friday afternoon at Viking Field.

Melissa Holzopfel recorded her second complete-game shutout in three games with another dominant performance in the circle. She struck out 14 Titan hitters and walked just one. She surrendered just two hits in seven innings.

Becky Hurosky was the spark plug offensively for the Vikings, driving in two of the three Cleveland State runs. She finished 2-3 with two singles.

The Vikings scored in the first inning to take the early lead. Jenna Deang led off with a single and advanced to third by way of a sac bunt and a heads up baserunning play on a pop up to shallow right field. Hurosky followed with a single up the middle to score Deang and put Cleveland State up 1-0.

The Vikings and Titans traded scoreless innings until the fifth when CSU tacked on two insurance runs. This time Brooke Albaugh led off with a single and was bunted to second. Hurosky then roped her second RBI base hit of the day scoring Albaugh from second to make it 2-0.

Emily Yacapraro pinch ran for Hurosky and moved into scoring position by stealing second base. She later scored on a passed ball for the third run of the game for CSU.

Holzopfel was steady the rest of the way, recording five strikeouts in the last two frames to seal the game for the Vikings.
