Cleveland State Softball Notches Two Wins at College of Charleston

Charleston, SC-The Cleveland State softball team got two wins on Saturday at the College of Charleston Maroon and Gold Challenge, defeating Marist and Charleston for their third and fourth victories of the season. 

In game one, the Vikings defeated Marist by a final score of 7-3. Cleveland State scored single runs in every inning en route to the victory. 

Jenna Deang, Becky Hurosky and Peyton Mueller-Stenz all recorded multi-hit games and combined for four of the seven runs driven in by the Vikings in the game. 

Deang finished 3-4 in the game and drove in a run. Hurosky finished with two hits, both of which went for extra bases, and two RBI. Mueller-Stenz finished 2-3 with an RBI. 

Jenna Watts earned the win in relief, going the final four and a third innings to earn the win. Watts gave up just two hits in shutting down the Marist offense to help the Vikings earn the game one win. 

In the second game, it was a pitcher's duel between Cleveland State's Melissa Holzopfel and Charleston's Payton Lemiere. The two teams combined for seven hits, and the game was scoreless through the first five innings until the Vikings broke through in the sixth. Emma Gilkerson reached on a fielding error with two outs and Mueller-Stenz followed with a triple to bring home the game's only run. 

Holzopfel retired the final six batters in order to finish off the victory. The Vikings improve to 4-10 on the season and will finish out the weekend with one final game against Marist at noon tomorrow.
