Cleveland State Softball Drops Two on Day 2 at JU/UNF Invitational

Jacksonville, FL-The Cleveland State Softball team suffered two tough losses on Saturday on the second day of the season-opening JU/UNF Invitational.

The Vikings fell to Memphis 8-2 in the first game of the day, and then dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to North Florida in the nightcap. The losses dropped CSU to 0-4 on the season.

In the opener, Memphis got off to a hot start and coasted to the win via the mercy rule in five innings. The Tigers scored three in the first, two in the second and three in the third to quickly open up an 8-0 advantage. Cleveland State collected two hits but could not push a run across to extend the game.

In the second game of the day, the Vikings showed improvement in a 4-3 loss to North Florida. After falling 10-2 in five innings to UNF on Friday, Cleveland State battled and ultimately came up one run shy in a re-match in the evening game on Saturday.

North Florida scored three in the bottom of the third to take the early lead. Cleveland State answered back with a run in the fourth, as Emma Gilkerson smoked an RBI double down the left field line that scored Grace Narkum

A North Florida solo home run in the sixth made it 4-1, but the Vikings mounted a comeback in the final inning.

Sophie Spellman led off with a walk, and Emily Yacapraro followed with an infield single. Peyton Mueller-Stenz followed with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Spellman. She and Yacapraro both moved up a base on the throw home, putting runners at second and third with no one out.

Following a strikeout, Jenna Deang singled to left field to score Yacapraro. That made it 4-3 with the tying run just 60 feet away at third base. UNF's Ashley Connor then struck out the next two batters to end the game, as the comeback came up just short.

Cleveland State will be back in action tomorrow morning as the Vikings face Jacksonville in the final game of the season-opening weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
