Softball hosts weekend series against UIC; still in race for first

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland State softball program is still in the race for first place in the Horizon League with six games to go in its season which continues with a weekend series against UIC on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at Viking Field.

Friday will have one game at 3 PM ET while Saturday will feature a doubleheader, with a first pitch set for 1 PM. Prior to Saturday's first game, Cleveland State will honor its graduating class with a special Senior Day celebration. Fans will want to be in their seats before 12:30 PM to take in the ceremonies and thank the student-athletes for their accomplishments at CSU.

Three Game Series vs. UIC (Horizon League)

- Friday, April 29: 3 PM ET

- Saturday, April 30: 1 PM ET (Senior Day at 12:30 PM)

HORIZON LEAGUE STANDINGS

Cleveland State currently ranks third in the conference with six lefts to go on the schedule. The Vikes will play UIC this weekend, followed by a three-game series against Detroit Mercy.

1. Oakland: 14-3 (.824)

2. Robert Morris: 14-5 (.737)

3. Cleveland State: 14-6 (.700)

 

LAST TIME OUT

The Vikings split their road doubleheader against Green Bay on Wednesday behind a big performance from Becky Hurosky at the plate. The junior from Brunswick, Ohio went 4-for-7 (.571) in the two games, which included her fifth and sixth home runs of the season. She is now ranked in a tie for sixth in the league in homers, eighth in slugging percentage (.525) and ninth in on-base plus slugging percentage (.873).

 

PLAYER TO WATCH

Jenna Deang has been the steady force atop the Vikings lineup and currently sits sixth in the Horizon in batting average (.358), hits (38) and steals (8), and ninth in on-base percentage (.414).

 

THREE TIMES THE CHARM FOR HOLZOPFEL

Melissa Holzopfel was just named the Horizon League Pitcher of the week after an unreal four apperances on the mound. The standout freshmanwent a perfect 3-0 overall with 23 2/3 innings pitched. She allowed just 18 hits and two earned runs to post a 0.76 ERA. She also struck out 22 batters. The Massillon, Ohio native ranks second in the Horizon in strikeouts (170), third in wins (12) and innings pitched (140), tied for fourth in complete games (13), sixth in opponent batting average (.239) and seventh in ERA (3.00).
