Softball starts fast, caught by late-inning surge by RMU

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Cleveland State softball program got off to another hot start, but in the end host Robert Morris University was able to pull off a four-run comeback as the Colonials escaped with a 7-6 victory in Horizon League play at the North Athletic Complex on Sunday.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Jenna Deang was a force at the dish as she finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

- Becky Hurosky chipped in a 2-for-4 day that featured a double.

- Maggie Kusmits picked up a RBI on a 1-for-4 performance.

- Kiera Frascone went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.

- Kaelin Ettinger might have recorded a 0-1 day in the box score, but she was a big contributor for the Vikings with a team-high two runs and a game-best two walks.

- Sophie Spellman also recorded a RBI, Courtney Fernette crossed the plate and Katie Holmes swiped a bag in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Cleveland State got off to another fast start as a Kusmits liner made its way through the shortstops glove to score Deang as the Vikes went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.

- RMU answered right back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at one.

- A Deang RBI-single to right field was followed by a Kusmits RBI-single down the left field line as CSU leaped back ahead 3-1 in the top of the second.

- The Colonials scrapped together another run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.

- Spellman got the scoring going in the top of the third with a RBI SAC fly, and Deang was right behind with a two-RBI single to left for the Vikings to take a 6-2 lead.

- RMU ended the game with two runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth as the long ball propelled the Colonials to their 7-6 win.

NEXT UP

There won't be any rest for the CSU program as the Vikes return home to Cleveland for a Horizon League series on Tuesday, April 5 and Wednesday, April 6 against Northern Kentucky at Viking Field. Tuesday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM ET while Wednesday will have a single-game with a first pitch set for 11 AM.
