Softball opens Horizon League play with thrilling victory over IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS – The Cleveland State softball team got back in the win column in exciting fashion as the Vikings opened Horizon League play with a thrilling 3-1 victory on the road at IUPUI on Sunday. 

Freshman pitcher Melissa Holzopfel threw another complete-game gem while Sophie Spellman hit a two-run shot in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Vikes to the win.

RECORDS: Cleveland State 5-14 (1-0 Horizon), IUPUI 2-18 (0-1 Horizon)

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Holzopfel continued her early-season success in the circle as she went for another complete game, her fifth of the season (tied for second overall in the conference). Over nine innings she scattered four hits to go with an earned run and 13 strikeouts. After the performance, Hozopfel improved to second in the Horizon with 81 strikeouts over 63 innings pitched.

- Spellman was the hero in the top of the ninth inning as she ripped a two-run shot over the left field wall to push CSU to the victory. She finished the day 1-for-3 with the two RBI and a run scored. It was her first homerun of the season.

- Holzopfel also chipped in with the bat with a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning. She ended Sunday 1-for-3 at the dish with a RBI, a run scored and a walk.

- Aly Packish (1-for-4), Mackenzie Tucker (1-for-3, R, BB), and Kaelin Ettinger (1-for-3, BB) also collected hits for the Vikings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- IUPUI got out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second.

- The solo shot by Holzopfel tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth.

- The two sides played a scoreless seventh and eighth before the Spellman two-run homer gave the Vikings a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth.

- CSU slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning to collect its first Horizon League win of the season.
