Softball opens Horizon League play with road series at IUPUI

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland State softball program is fresh off its Spring training tune up and ready to get Horizon League play underway as the Vikings head to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI in both team's conference opener. 

The two squads will play in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 13 at 1 PM and 3 PM ET and follow it with a single game on Monday, March 14 at 1 PM.

"We are very excited to begin conference play," head softball coach Amy Kyler said. "Preseason play has prepared us very well. The team dynamic is strong and they are ready to fight."

CSU enters the weekend tied for second in the Horizon League with its 60 RBI on the season. The Vikes are also third in the conference in stolen bases (20 steals in 22 attempts), third in team batting average (.244) and fourth in on-base percentage (.314).

Melissa Holzopfel has helped lead the charge on offense and sits sixth in the conference with a .350 batting average. The freshman is also tied for third in the Horizon in hits (21) and tied for eighth in runs scored (9). 

Sydney Bajusz is tied for fourth in the league in stolen bases (5) and Becky Hurosky is tied for fifth in homeruns (2) to round out the Vikings attack.

In the circle, Viking pitchers have collected 103 strikeouts, the fourth-highest total in the league.

Holzopfel has been pitching out of the No. 1 spot and ranks second in the Horizon with 68 strikeouts and fourth in the conference with 17 of those punchouts coming on batters looking at the pitch. She is also tied for seventh in the conference in wins (2).
