Softball falls twice on second day of Wings ETC Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Cleveland State women's softball program fell twice on the second day of the Wings ETC Classic on Saturday. The Vikings suffered losses to Tennessee Tech and host USC Upstate and will be back with a final game on Sunday against ACC power Pittsburgh.

 

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Cleveland State – 3, Tennessee Tech – 8 (seven innings)
LOCATION: Cyrill Stadium – Spartanburg, S.C.
RECORDS: Cleveland State 4-8 (0-0 Horizon), Tennessee Tech 9-5 (0-0 Ohio Valley) 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Becky Hurosky led the offensive attack with her second homerun on the young season as she went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

- Kiera Frascone wrapped up the opening game 1-for-3 with an RBI.

- Alexa Sieger finished with a team-high two hits (2-of-3 at the plate).

- Sydney Bajusz recorded a single on two attempts with a run scored.

- Aly Packish also added an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

 - Tennessee Tech jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

- The second and third were scoreless before Tennessee Tech added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 4-0 advantage.

- Cleveland State answered back with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

- Tennessee Tech went off for four runs in the top of the seventh to hold an 8-1 advantage.

- CSU battled back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but it was too late as the Golden Eagles took the 8-3 victory.

RECORDS: Cleveland State 4-9 (0-0 Horizon), USC Upstate 12-1 (0-0 Big South)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- The Vikings ran into a hot pitcher and were only able to manage a single hit in the game against the Spartans.

- Melissa Holzopfel went 1-for-3 at the dish and recorded the Vikes lone hit.

- Torrie Jenkins threw three shutouts innings to end the game and allowed only one hit over the relief appearance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- USC Upstate did its damage quick as the Spartans raced out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning.

- CSU would shut USC Upstate down the rest of the way, but couldn't get its offense going as the Spartans claimed the 7-0 win.

NEXT UP

 The Vikings will conclude their stay at the Wings ETC Classic with a showdown against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 11 AM ET.
