Softball drops twinbill to open Wings ETC Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Cleveland State women's softball team dropped two games to start its stay at USC Upstate's Wings ETC Classic on Friday. The Vikings were knocked off by the host Spartans and ACC power Pittsburgh.

 

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Cleveland State – 1, USC Upstate – 9 (five innings)
LOCATION: Cyrill Stadium – Spartanburg, S.C.
RECORDS: Cleveland State 4-6 (0-0 Horizon), USC Upstate 11-0 (0-0 Big South)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Brooke Albaugh went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, which included a double and an RBI.

- Becky Hurosky added the Vikings only other hit as she finished 1-for-2 with a single.

- Katie Holmes entered the game as a pinch runner and scored CSU's lone run.

- Torrie Jenkins threw a shutout inning in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- USC Upstate scored four runs in the first, one in the second and three in the third to jump out to a commanding 8-0 lead.

- CSU got a runner to cross the plate in the top of the fourth, but USC Upstate countered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the run-rule victory.

- The Spartans shut out the Vikings in the top of the fifth to close out the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

-Kaelin Ettiner posted a big game as she went 1-of-1 with a homerun and three RBI.

- Melissa Holzopfel (1-for-3), Becky Hurosky (1-for-3), Maggie Kusmits (1-for-2) and Albaugh (1-for-1) all recorded hits for the Vikes.

- Katie Holmes, Taylor Duncan and Ettinger each scored a run, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Pittsburgh raced out to a 10-0 lead through the first three innings of play.

- Ettiner's three-run blast in the top of the fifth cut the Pitt advantage to 10-3.

- The Panthers added another run in the bottom of the inning to close out the run-rule win. 

NEXT UP

The Vikings will continue their stay at the Wings ETC Classic on Saturday, Feb. 26. CSU will take on Tennessee Tech at 3 PM ET, followed by a showdown with USC Upstate at 5 PM.
