Vikings' Winning Streak Snapped on Wednesday

LONGWOOD, Florida – The Cleveland State Vikings softball team dropped both of their contests on Wednesday (March 11), snapping their three-game winning streak. The Vikings first fell to LIU (8-6) in extra innings, before falling to Army (4-3).

Game One Recap:

Cleveland State was held scoreless throughout the first four innings, trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth frame.

Courtney Fernette notched a double to right center in the fifth, to get in scoring position for Kaelin Ettinger. The freshman from Painesville, Ohio, smacked a single to left field, advancing Fernette to third, who eventually scored on the throw.

LIU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning, but Cleveland State would respond by adding two runs in the bottom of the inning. With Mackenzie Tucker and Lindsay Ward on base, Aly Packish smoked a double to centerfield, scoring both Tucker and Ward, tying the game, 3-3.

Both Cleveland State and LIU would trade runs in the eighth inning. Sydney Bajusz smashed a two-run homerun, extending the game one more inning.

LIU recorded three runs in the top of the ninth, while the Vikings only notched one run off of a Lindsay Ward single, scoring Ettinger.

Taylor Betz, Kelly Hysong and Hanna Griffin all pitched for Cleveland State in its first game of the day, with Griffin recording the loss.

Game Two Recap:

The Vikings found themselves in a three-run hole heading into the second inning of their contest against Army.

Lindsay Ward registered a single in the top of the second frame, scoring Sydney Bajusz, while Kelly Hysong reached on a fielder's choice in the third inning, scoring Ward.

Cleveland State tied the ballgame up, 3-3, in the top of the sixth inning, when Aly Packish recorded an RBI single.

Army would respond, however, in the bottom of the sixth, tacking on a run of its own, to take a 4-3 lead.

Both Hanna Griffin and Taylor Betz pitched for the Vikings in their second game. Betz pitched 5.0 innings, recording the loss, while Griffin only pitched 1.0 inning.

Up Next:

The Vikings will have an off day on Thursday, March 12th, but will be back in the diamond on Friday, March 13th for another doubleheader. Cleveland State will wrap-up its time at the Spring Break games on Saturday, March 14th.
