Cleveland State Splits Sunday Doubleheader

LONGWOOD, Florida – The Cleveland State Vikings softball team split their doubleheader on Sunday (March 8). Cleveland State opened up the day with a 7-5 extra innings loss to Valparaiso, before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory over Pennsylvania in Longwood, Florida.

Game Two Recap:

The Vikings' ballgame against Pennsylvania was a defensive battle, as there were zero runs scored in the first five innings and neither team committed an error on the day.

Hallie Ward singled to shortstop to lead off the top of the sixth inning. Kaelin Ettinger then slapped a single up the middle, advancing Ward to second base. A wild pitch sent both Ettinger and Ward to second and third base, respectively, with no outs. Junior Paige Hartley entered the game to pinch run for Ettinger, after Mackenzie Tucker fouled out. With Ward on third base and Hartley on second, Lindsay Ward smoked a bases-clearing, two-run double to center field, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Two runs would be enough, as Hanna Griffin was lights out in the circle, pitching a complete game shutout.

Cleveland State will have Monday (March 9) off, before taking the field for another doubleheader on Tuesday (March 10).
