Vikings Win First Game of Day, Fall in Second Contest

LONGWOOD, Florida – The Cleveland State Vikings softball team split their matches on Saturday (March 8), first taking down Bethune-Cookman, 3-0, before falling to Creighton in five innings, 8-0.

Game One Recap:

After two scoreless innings, the Vikings' bats were hot in the third frame. Mackenzie Tucker opened up the inning for Cleveland State reaching first base on a single. Lindsay Ward stepped to the plate next and launched a two-run homerun, to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Kelly Hysong reached first base on an error, advancing all the way to third base. With one out, Becky Hurosky grounded out to first base, scoring Hysong.

The three runs scored in the bottom of the third inning would be enough, as Kelly Hysong pitched a scoreless, complete game. The senior allowed five hits, recording three strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched, earning the victory.

Game Two Recap:

Creighton recorded all of the scoring in Cleveland State's second game of the day, notching two runs in the bottom of the first inning, two runs in the third and four runs in the fifth.

The Vikings tallied five hits, but were unable to score any runs.

Kelly Hysong recorded the loss, falling to 3-3 on the season. Hysong pitched 1.0 innings, Hanna Griffin threw 3.0 innings and Taylor Betz was in the circle for 0.1 innings.

The Vikings will be back on the field beginning Sunday, March 7 for another doubleheader. Cleveland State will face off against Valparaiso at 9 a.m. and Pennsylvania at 11:30 a.m.
