Vikings Begin Season 1-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Cleveland State Vikings started the season 1-1 on Friday (Feb. 14), first suffering a 7-2 loss against Delaware in its season opener, but bouncing back to garner a 6-4 victory over Incarnate Word at the Cardinal Invitation.

Game One:

Sophomore Aly Packish began the Vikings' first game of their season-opening double header with a solo homerun over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning. Cleveland State held Delaware scoreless for four innings, taking a 1-0 lead into the fifth.

The Blue Hens' bats became alive in the fifth inning, as they knocked in four runs. Sydney Bajusz smacked a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth for Cleveland State, but Delaware would respond by tacking on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Game Two:

Trailing 4-1 in the sixth inning of game two for Cleveland State, the Vikings put together a three-run, two-out rally to tie the game 4-4.

Becky Hurosky started the rally with a two-out double to left field. Paige Hartley entered the game to pinch run for Hurosky and Gabby Shackelford worked a walk. With two outs and runners at first and second base, sophomore Mackenzie Tucker doubled to left center, scoring both Hartley and Shackelford. Next up to the plate for Cleveland State was junior Courtney Fernette who singled to right field, scoring Tucker.

The Vikings tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning, off of a two-run single by Packish.

After taking the loss in the first game, Kelly Hysong (1-1) earned the win against Incarnate Word, pitching 7.0 innings.

Cleveland State will be back on the diamond tomorrow, taking on Grambling (11 a.m.) and Fairleigh Dickson (1 p.m.).
