GAME RECAP

CLEVELAND -- Sydney Bajusz, Hallie Ward and Valeri Broschk each drove in runs, but Cleveland State dropped the series finale to Detroit Mercy 5-3 on Wednesday at Viking Field.

Cleveland State, which dropped to 10-23 overall and 3-6 in the Horizon League, jumped out to a 2-0 lead but could not hold off the Titans comeback. Detroit Mercy improved to 18-21 overall and 10-5 in the league with the victory.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the first inning without the benefit of a base hit.

Kelly Hysong led off the Vikings first inning with a walk and after Aly Packish flew out, Lindsay Ward also drew a walk.

Riley Ries reached first base on a fielder's choice, which loaded the bases when Lindsay Ward beat the throw to second base.

Cleveland State scored the first run of the game when Bajusz reached on an error, which permitted Hysong to cross home plate giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

Hallie Ward then increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI groundout to second, which brought home Lindsay Ward.

Detroit Mercy answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The Titans strung together three hits in the fifth inning, which resulted in three runs giving Detroit Mercy a 5-2 lead.

The Vikings fought back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hallie Ward led of the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a ground out by Mackenzie Tucker. Broschk followed with a single up the middle, which brought home Hallie Ward and trimmed the lead to 5-3.

The Vikings rally continued when Paige Hartley walked advancing Broschk to second base. With two runners on, Hysong ripped a line drive to first, but Leena Mortensen snared the liner and stepped on first for an inning-ending double play.

Cleveland State returns to action on Friday (April 12) when it visits Youngstown State to open a three-game series. The teams will play one game on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 13) beginning at 1 p.m.
