Vikings Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader to UIC

CHICAGO -- Gabby Shackelford went 2-for-3 with a double and Hallie Ward homered and drove in three runs, but Cleveland State lost both games of its Horizon League doubleheader at Flames Field on Saturday. UIC won the opener 15-1 and then captured game two by a 5-4 score.

Shackelford was 2-for-2 in game one, while Hallie Ward hit her first homer of the season and drove in three runs in game two to lead the Vikings.

UIC, which improved to 10-14 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League, got a two-out hit to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning to complete the sweep of Cleveland State.

UIC plated two runs in both the first and third innings to jump out to 4-0 lead in game two, but the Vikings would rally.

Hallie Ward led off the Vikings fifth inning with a walk and advanced to third base when Shackelford reached on a Flame throwing error.

Taylor Duncan scored the Vikings first run of the second game when she reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Hallie Ward.

Cleveland State, which dropped to 6-19 overall and 0-3 in league play, tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Aly Packish singled to leftfield to lead off the inning, and one batter later, Riley Ries singled to center to put a pair of runners on base.

Hallie Ward then blasted a three-run home run to leftfield to tie the game at 4-4.

UIC would answer in the bottom of the sixth inning when Emily Wetzel delivered a two-out double to score what proved to be the winning run.

Hanna Griffin went the whole way for the Vikings in the circle as she allowed nine hits and five runs over 6.0 innings.

UIC took control of game one from the outset as it jumped out to a 13-0 lead after three innings.

The Vikings scored their run in the fourth inning when Sydney Bajusz singled in Lindsay Ward.

Cleveland State returns to non-conference action on Wednesday (March 27) at Robert Morris where the Vikings will face the Colonials in a doubleheader.
