2018 Cleveland State Softball Season Highlights

  • Senior Mackenzie Joecken and junior Riley Ries were both named to the All-Horizon League second team.
  • Joecken was one of the top utility players in the League this year, starting 36 games and making 18 starts as a pitcher. She hit .324 with 11 runs, seven doubles, five home runs and 24 RBI. In the circle, Joecken won six games and had six complete games, working 90.2 innings with a pair of shutouts and led the team with 80 strikeouts.
  • Ries was the only Viking to play in all 49 games this year, making 48 starts, including 44 behind the plate. She hit .333 with 16 runs and led the team in doubles (10), home runs (6) and RBI (31). Ries concluded the year by reaching base safely in 11 straight games and will enter the 2019 season with a seven-game hit streak. She had nine multi-RBI and 10 multi-hit games this year.
  • Senior Mel Woodard led the team with a .336 batting average and added a team-high 22 runs with six doubles, two triples and seven RBI.
  • Sophomore Hannah Breeden hit .305 this year with 11 runs, five doubles, a home run and 12 runs batted in.
  • Senior Kristin Catalano set the CSU program record with 70 career relief appearances. She went 3-2 with a 3.70 ERA in 22 appearances this year.
  • Freshman Olivia Jones drove in 11 runs in just 61 at-bats this year. She scored seven runs and six of her 15 hits were in pinch hit appearances.
  • CSU honored its five seniors - Catalano, Kait Gairing, Joecken, Aubrie Tone and Woodard - prior to its doubleheader against Northern Kentucky on April 28.
  • Ries was named to the Horizon League All-Academic team. She sports a 3.65 grade point average as an exercise fitness specialist major.
  • After dropping their first two games of the season, the Vikings rattled off seven straight wins.
  • CSU traveled out west for 11 games over spring break, playing five games in the Fresno State Bulldog Classic and six games at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.
  • Joecken was the only player in the Horizon League to earn both Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors.
  • Macy Kaisk and Ries also earned Player of the Week honors this year for CSU.
