Softball Drops League Opener to Green Bay, 7-2

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team dropped its Horizon League opener, 7-2, to Green Bay on Friday afternoon at Viking Field.

The Vikings fell to 10-18 overall and 0-1 in the Horizon League, while Green Bay improved to 5-19 overall and 2-2 in the League.

The series was originally slated to be played in Green Bay, but was moved to Cleveland as Green Bay's field was unplayable. The Phoenix is the home team in this weekend's series.

Hanna Breeden and Riley Ries both had two hits for the Vikings, while Mel Woodard, Mackenzie Joecken and Olivia Jones had one hit each.

The Vikings scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead as Paige Hartley led off the game with a walk and moved to third on Mel Woodard's bunt single. Ries followed with a single to drive in Hartley for her team-leading 20th RBI of the season.

However, the Phoenix would score two runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

CSU added a run in the sixth as Ries led off with a double, moved to third on Joecken's single and scored on an RBI single by Jones that sliced the deficit to 6-2. Breeden followed with a single to load the bases, but the Vikings couldn't manage another run.

Green Bay would score a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.

The teams will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Viking Field. The first game is slated for 12:00 pm.
