Vikings Slated to Host Five Games This Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team is slated to host five games this week, including the first three Horizon League games of the season this weekend.

CSU will host Niagara in the Krenzler Dome on Wednesday (March 28) at 2:00 pm for a doubleheader. The opening Horizon League series of the season has also been moved from Green Bay and will now be played in Cleveland this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a single game on Friday (March 30) at 3:00 pm with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 31) at 1:00 pm.

The Vikings begin the week with a 9-16 record and have been out of action since playing six games at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic from March 14-17. CSU went 1-5 at the event, but four of the losses were by one run with the other loss to Tennessee, a team that has been ranked in the top-10 all season and has spent a week at No. 1.

CSU has played in 10, one-run games this year, including five straight.

Niagara begins the week with a 7-16 mark and owns a 10-4 win over the Vikings this year in the season opener in the Krenzler Dome. Green Bay is 4-17 overall and dropped two of three games at Wright State over the weekend to open League play.

Mackenzie Joecken has led the Vikings at the plate and in the circle this year. She is hitting .378 with two doubles, three homers and nine RBI and also leads the team with five wins, three complete games, two shutouts and 34 strikeouts in 47.1 innings of work. She is the only player in the Horizon League to earn Player and Pitcher of the Week this year.

Mel Woodard is batting .369 with a team-best 24 hits, while Macy Kaisk is hitting .308 with two homers and nine RBI. Riley Ries is batting .305 with three homers and a team-leading 19 RBI, while Kaisk, Ries and Kait Gairing share the team lead with four doubles.

Kristin Catalano has been strong in relief this year, making 13 appearances and leading the team with a 3.15 ERA with two wins.

Joecken, Alicia Major and Hanna Breeden all have one save.

The Vikings are back in action for a three game Horizon League series next weekend as CSU hosts UIC. The teams will play a single game on Friday (April 6) at 3:00 pm with a doubleheader slated for Saturday (April 7) at 1:00 pm.
