Vikings Fall to Maryland, 5-4, in Extra Innings

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Cleveland State played its eighth one-run game of the season tonight, falling to Maryland in eight innings, 5-4, at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.

CSU is not 8-16 this year and will continue play with an 11:00 pm ET game against North Dakota tonight.

CSU pounded out 12 hits against Maryland as Bailee Gray went 3-for-5, while Mel Woodard, Hanna Breeden and Kait Gairing all finished 2-for-4 and Riley Ries went 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Woodard also scored two runs.

Maryland took a 3-0 lead early with two runs in the first and another in the second, but the Vikings got on the board in the second on Ries' solo homer. Ries' two-run single in the fifth tied the game at 3-3 and it stayed that way until the Terrapins plated a run in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

However, Breeden's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh tied the game, but the Vikings could not push the winning run across the plate.

Both teams started the eighth inning with a runner on second base as the tournament is using international rules. Maryland used a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to score and take a 5-4 lead and the Vikings failed to score the equalizer as Marissa Marcelli was thrown out at the plate on Gray's single to right field to end the game.
