Vikings Drop Tight 2-1 Game to North Dakota in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Mackenzie Joecken and Riley Ries both had two hits, but the Cleveland State softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to North Dakota on the second day of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Vikings also fell to host Hawaii, 6-5, in the evening.

The Vikings, who played in their seventh one-run game of the season this year against North Dakota, are now 8-14 this season.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the third inning vs. North Dakota when Ries singled to put runners on the corner with one out and Joecken followed with an RBI single to score Mel Woodard. However, the Bison came back with two runs in the fourth on a two-run single. The second run scored prior to the third out being made at third base.

CSU had an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead in the sixth inning as the Vikings loaded the bases with one out, but North Dakota got out of the inning with a double play.

Joecken and Ries both went 2-for-3, while Woodard also had a hit.

Macy Kaisk worked 4 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while Kristin Catalano pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. She gave up just one hit and struck out one.

In the nightcap against Hawaii, the Vikings scored three runs in the third on a Ries sacrifice fly and a two-run double from Joecken. The Rainbows sliced the deficit to 3-2 with single tallies in the third and fourth innings, but CSU scored two runs in the seventh to push the lead back to 5-2 on Emery Sipe's two-run double.

However, Hawaii scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning - including a walk-off three-run homer - to claim the win.

Joecken, Sipe and Ollivia Jones had two hits each.

The Vikings play two games on Friday (March 16) as the Vikings face Maryland at 8:30 pm ET and North Dakota at 11:00 pm ET.
