Vikings Drop Two Games to Open Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The Cleveland State softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday on the first day of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic.

The Vikings fell to Monmouth, 5-1, to open the tournament and dropped a 9-0 decision to host Fresno State this evening.

In the opener, Monmouth scored two runs in the fourth inning, but Mackenzie Joecken's solo homer in the fifth cut the CSU deficit in half. However, Monmouth plated three more runs in the sixth to break the game open.

CSU was limited to just two hits with Mel Woodard having the other one.

Joecken started in the circle and worked four innings, giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, host Fresno State jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three tallies in the first and added another run in the third before plating five runs in the fifth.

Hannah Breeden went 2-for-2, while Paige Hartley had one hit.

The Vikings are back in action for two games on Saturday (March 10), playing California at 12:00 pm ET and Fresno State at 2:30 pm ET.
