Vikings Split Final Two Games at Belmont Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Cleveland State softball team split its final two games of the Belmont Tournament on Sunday, falling to North Dakota, 4-3, and winning at Tennessee State, 3-2.

The Vikings are now 8-6 this year.

In today's first game, the Bison scored a run in the second inning to take the lead, but Paige Hartley had an RBI single in the third inning and Hannah Breeden added one in the fourth to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. A two-run homer from North Dakota in the fourth gave them a 3-2 lead, but CSU answered back on an Olivia Jones RBI double in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

However, the Bison scored in the bottom of the sixth and the Vikings couldn't muster the tying run in the seventh.

Eight different Vikings had one hit in the game, while Emily Hale, Hannah Tanis and Kait Gairing all scored runs.

Alicia Major was strong in the circle, working five innings and giving up three runs, while Taylor Miokovic worked one inning.

In the victory over Tennessee State, the Vikings got on the board in the first as Hartley scored on a wild pitch. A Riley Ries two-run double in the third pushed the lead to 3-0, but the Tigers came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to slice the deficit to 3-2.

But the Tigers would get no closer as three CSU pitchers combined to allow just five hits with four strikeouts in the win.

Macy Kaisk started and worked 3 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with a strikeout, while Kristin Catalano worked 2 1/3 innings. She gave up just one hit and earned the win to improve to 2-0.

Mackenzie Joecken pitched the final inning to earn her first save of the season as she struck out two of the three batters she faced.

Hartley, Mel Woodard and Ries had hits for the Vikings against TSU.

CSU is back in action at the Bulldog Classic in Frenso, Calif., from March 9-11.
