ROCHESTER, Mich. - Susan Knight fired a complete game and Cleveland State pounded out 11 hits as the Vikings won the series opener at Oakland, 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
CSU improved to 14-27 overall and 7-9 in the Horizon League, while Oakland fell to 10-24 overall and 5-7 in the League.
Knight won her second straight start with a strong showing, holding the Golden Grizzlies to one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Riley Ries and plated five runs in the third to extend the lead to 7-0. Oakland tallied its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third.
Katelind Phillips, Ries and Mel Woodard had two hits each, while Alyson Broschk, Darien Ward, Mackenzie Joecken, Kait Gairing and Alisha Silva all had one hit. Erica McNew drew three walks and scored a pair of runs.
Ries had three RBI and Phillips drove in two.
The teams will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Wednesday with the first game scheduled for 1:00 pm.
