Woodard Breaks CSU Single Season HR Mark

LORETTO, Pa. - Cleveland State senior Cynthia Woodard broke the single season school record with her 20th home run, but the Vikings dropped a pair of games at St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon.

CSU fell in game one, 8-2, and lost the nightcap, 13-9.

The Vikings are now 20-20 this season, while the Red Flash improved to 28-12.

Woodard, who went 3-for-7 with two runs in today's twinbill, hit a solo homer in the seventh inning of game two, breaking Dara Toman's old record of 19 homers in 2012. It increased Woodard's career total to 39, second all-time in school history.

Alyson Broschk, Nena Doran and Susan Knight also homered today, while Broschk was a combined 4-for-6 with a run and three RBI in the two games.

SFU scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Vikings used a Red Flash error and a Katelind Phillips RBI single in the second to take a 2-1 lead. It remained that way until the sixth when the Red Flash scored six runs.

CSU used a Mackenzie Joecken RBI single and RBI groundout by Broschk to score two runs in the first inning of the second game, but SFU scored three runs in the bottom of the first and six more in the second to assume a 9-2 lead.

A solo homer by Knight in the third brought the Vikings within 9-3, but the Red Flash plated two more runs in the third to extend the lead to 11-3. Knight and Broschk delivered RBI singles in the fifth and Joecken added an RBI groundout to pull CSU within 12-6, but the Red Flash once again responded with two more runs to take a 14-6 lead.

Solo homers from Doran, Woodard and Broschk in the seventh provided the final runs for the Vikings.

CSU is slated to return to action on Friday (April 24) when the Vikings open a three-game series against Oakland at 4:00 p.m. at Viking Field.
