YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Jennifer Wieand and Jessica McCloy each scored goals and Kelly Zinkiewich posted her second career shutout as Cleveland State won for the first time ever in Horizon League play, knocking off Youngstown State, 2-0, on Friday night at Stambaugh Field.

The win, which snaps a 27-match winless streak for the Vikings in Horizon League play, improved CSU's record to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in league play while Youngstown State drops to 1-12-1 overall and 0-3 in league action.

Cleveland State is now 1-26-1 in Horizon League action during its four years competing in the league with the lone tie coming at YSU in 2005.

The win also allowed the Vikings to surpass the school record for wins in a season, which was set last year when CSU went 3-17.

"This was a great win for our program," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "These young ladies have worked very hard over the last couple of years to build this program and this win is the fruit of their labor.

"We've come so close to winning a league match before but have seen the victories slip away even though we may have been the better team. Hopefully, this will allow the program to get over the hump and we can begin to make the move up the league standings."

As has been the case all season long, Wieand got the Vikings started, snapping a three-match scoreless stretch for the Vikings. Her first-half goal allowed her to set school season records this season for goals (7) and points (16).

"We thought that we matched up pretty well with Youngstown State and the difference in the match was going to be how well we did defensively against Lauren Brennan and how many scoring opportunities Jenni and Shayna Back create for us.

"Our defense was strong and kept our shape all night and even though Brennan had a couple of chances, we were able to keep her off the scoreboard. At the other end of the field, Jenni proved why she is one of the best forwards in the conference this year."

Wieand gave the Vikings the early lead when she was able to get a foot on a loose ball in the box and slip it into the corner of the net at 12:32 mark of the first half. The play had started when Emily Arpidone played a through ball ahead that the Penguin defense had a

The score held until the 62nd minute when McCloy made a run at the near-post on a Marley Greiner corner kick and headed home the cross from seven yards out

The assists by both Arpidone and Greiner and the McCloy goal were the first points of the year for each player.

Youngstown State had an 18-12 edge in shots during the match with Zinkiewich making six saves to record her second shutout.

The match was the lone contest of the week for the Vikings, who will resume league play next Friday (Oct. 19) with a match at Milwaukee before returning home to host Valparaiso on Sunday (Oct. 21) at Krenzler Field.
