CLEVELAND, Ohio - Defending Horizon League champion UW-Milwaukee got three second-half goals after leading, 2-0, at halftime to defeat host Cleveland State, 5-0, on Sunday (Oct. 8) at Krenzler Field. The loss drops CSU to 2-13 and 1-3 in Horizon League play, while UW-Milwaukee is now 11-2-1 and 4-0 in league play.
After both teams got out to a slow start, UWM's Erin Kreuser took a Louise Vraney pass scored to put the Panthers on the board at the 21:58 mark. The Panthers would score again in the 39th minute when Beth Steuer scored unassisted from 15 yards out.
"The first two goals were plays that we usually stop, but we couldn't quite make the play," head coach Derrek Falor said.
Steuer added her second tally of the day and fourth of the season at the 59:29 mark off a rebound that deflected off CSU goalie Ashley Kidwell. Amanda Winn and Louise Vraney got credit for an assist on the play.
The Panthers added a goal off the foot of Carly Chertos in the 67th minute to extend their lead to 4-0. UWM's Joanna Severson converted a penalty kick at the 69:10 mark after a CSU foul in the box for the Panthers' fifth goal of the day.
UWM outshot the Vikings, 20-5, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Elicia Scaife led the Panthers with four shots while Sarah Teegarden and Brenda Neigbauer each had three.
Freshman Heather Wagner and junior Shayna Back each had two shots for the Vikings. Wagner had CSU's best scoring chance of the day, an on-target shot from the right side in the 81st minute that UWM goalie Ilana Bar-Av stopped with a diving effort.
"Today wasn't our best effort," Falor said. "But I give a lot of credit to UW-Milwaukee. They play a good brand of soccer and that's why there are the defending league champions."
