Cleveland State Women's Soccer Caps Off Season With 3-1 Victory Over Wright State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (4-10-3, 1-6-3) concluded its 2023 season with a 3-1 victory over Wright State (6-6-4, 4-3-2) on Saturday evening. The victory was the first in league play this season and came on Alumnae Night and their Cancer Awareness game.

The lone goal of the first half came off the foot of Erica Leinweber, as the junior finished off a long through ball from Mayra Sesmas in the 38th minute.

Wright State pulled even in the 55th minute as the Vikings were called for a handball in the box. Lauren Borchert's penalty kick hit the crossbar and just barely crossed the line to make it 1-1.

The Vikings regained the lead in the 64th minute as Leinweber netted her second goal of the evening off a pair of passes from Emma Pompo and Brooke Opferman. Six minutes later, Sesmas added an insurance goal, following up her initial shot that was blocked by a defender in the box, to lead 3-1.

Cleveland State held a 14-11 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Leinweber led the game with three shots including two on frame. Mollie McGuire picked up the win in goal after making four saves.
