Cleveland State Women's Soccer Topples Belmont, 2-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Cleveland State (2-3-0) started their Nashville trip with a 2-1 victory over Belmont (1-3-1) on Friday evening.

The Bruins started the scoring in the 12th minute as Maci Pekmezian volleyed in a corner by Avery Nowak to lead 1-0. Nine minutes later, the Vikings tied the game as Mayra Sesmas finished off a Kathryn Ramicone shot that was initially blocked.

Belmont nearly reclaimed the lead in the 25th minute but Kennedy Wise's shot was cleared off the line by a Viking defender. The scoreline remained the same heading into the break, with each team attempting four shots.

Cleveland State jumped in front during the 60th minute as Erica Leinweber rocketed a shot into the upper right corner from 30 yards out. The Green and White defense went into lockdown during the remainder of the contest to come out on top, 2-1.

The Vikings fired off eight shots on the evening with seven of those on target. Brooke Opferman and Ramicone each finished with two.

Liv Fain picked up the victory in goal after making two saves.

The Vikings will close out their trip to Nashville on Sunday, Sept. 3 against Middle Tennessee State at 2 p.m.
