Cleveland State Women's Soccer Earns First Win of the Year

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Vikings (1-1-0) went on the road Sunday afternoon and claimed their first victory of the year after defeating St. Bonaventure (0-1-1) by a final score of 3-1.

Cleveland State opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Mayra Sesmas fought through the defense and fired a shot to the near post off a throw-in from Lina Feltovich.

The Bonnies equalized in the 15th minute as Ami Komori snuck it into the far post off a through ball from Alexa Martinos. The Vikings went back ahead in the 35th minute after Brooke Opferman played a long ball through the middle to Payton Koebbe for her first career goal to make it 2-1.

The scoreline remained the same at the intermission, with the Green and White holding a 10-4 edge in shots, with seven of those on target.

The Vikings extended their lead to 3-1 in the 79th minute when Rylee Bussen headed home a corner by Maria Bashardoust. Cleveland State then fended off the final eleven minutes to earn their first win of the year.

The Green and White held a commanding 16-5 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. The Vikings defense held the Bonnies to just one shot in the second half.

McKenna Donahue led the game with three shots, with two of those on frame. Kathryn Ramicone, Bussen, and Koebbe each finished with two shots.

Liv Fain collected her first win of the year in goal after making one save.

Cleveland State remains on the road with a trip to Ohio University (1-0-0) on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m.
