Cleveland State Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Akron

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State dropped its first game of the season against local foe Akron Friday, 3-1.

The Zips scored the lone goal of the first half in the 19th minute as Morgan Perez floated a ball into the back of the net from 30 yards out.

Cleveland State evened the game in the 73rd minute off a set piece taken by Mayra Sesmas. Sesmas played a 25-yard free kick into the box that found Erica Leinweber, making it 1-1.

Two minutes later, Akron regained the lead as Ella Hadley touched in a corner kick taken by Caitlin Bruini. The visitors added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as the Green and White fell in the season opener, 3-1.

Akron held a narrow 11-10 advantage in shots, while Cleveland State took four corners compared to one by the visitors.

Kathryn Ramicone and Eleanor Simkonis each finished with two shots, including one on goal. Liv Fain made two saves in goal.

The Vikings will hit the road for the first time on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. against St. Bonaventure (0-0-1) at Tom 80' and Michelle Marra Athletics Field Complex.
