Cleveland State Women's Soccer Ties Kent State in Season Opener

KENT, Ohio – Cleveland State drew with Kent State 1-1 in their season opener on Thursday evening. The previous trip to Kent State in 2019 to open the year also ended in a tie.

THE GAME
The Vikings nearly opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Kathryn Ramicone's free kick from 30-yards out went off the top of the woodwork. Kent State claimed the lead in the 25th minute as Callie Cunningham scored off a deflection in the box, following a corner by Tianna Harris.

Cleveland State had a chance to even the game in the 30th minute as Erica Leinweber was one-on-one with the keeper, but her shot was saved.

The Golden Flashes went into the intermission leading 1-0, despite the Green and White holding a 5-2 edge in shots.

The Vikings equalized the score shortly after the half as Mayra Sesmas found the back of the net off a set a piece in the 50th minute.

Neither team would find the go-ahead goal down the stretch as the season opener ended in a 1-1 draw.

Cleveland State held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots with six of those going on target. Emma Pompo, Ramicone, and Leinweber finished with two shots apiece. Liv Fain came up with two saves in goal.

The Vikings will play their first game of the year on Krenzler Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. against St. Bonaventure.
