Women’s Soccer completes 2022 signing class with four student-athletes

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland State women's soccer program and head coach Dallas Boyer have finalized its 2022 CSU signing class, a four student-athlete group that features Mayra Sesmas, Elyse Broderick, Tehya Dave and Madison Norville.

The quartet rounds out a 13 student-athlete class for 2022, as the group joins the nine CSU signees from the Fall

MAYRA SESMAS | ATHENS, GEORGIA | ATTACKING MIDFIELDER | CLARKE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

BIO: Sesmas is coming to CSU out of Clarke Central High School where she posted a standout 2021 season. The creative attacking midfield was the top goal scorer for the Gladiators with 17 goals and seven assists, which led to a 2021 Region 8-AAAAA All-Region First Team selection. The Athens, Ga. native also took home All-Region Team Midfielder of the Year honors and helped lead her club soccer team to the Georgia State Cup Championships. To go with her play on the field, Sesmas was just as successful in the classroom as a National Honors Society student at Clarke Central.

CHOSE CLEVELAND STATE BECAUSE: "Everyone looks out for each other and it really feels like a family."

QUOTE FROM COACH: "Mayra plays with a creativity and flair that is very unique and a lot of fun to watch. We have had a track record the last four-to-five years of All-League level of play from our attacking central midfielders and I fully expect that Mayra can be one of the next in line to do the same. Whether it is watching her play or when we got the chance to spend some time with her in person, it is obvious that she has a genuine passion for the game that is infectious. Her ability to play under pressure, to make the first defender miss on the dribble, and to see passes into dangerous areas that most other players don't is going to result in Mayra creating dangerous opportunities for all of her attacking teammates. We are very excited to introduce Mayra into an already exciting group of attacking players and think that she has the potential to do great things in our system and style of play that will give her freedom to go and impact games immediately."

ELYSE BRODERICK | BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS | GOALKEEPER | CANTON HIGH SCHOOL

BIO: Broderick joins the Vikes out of Canton High School where she was a four-year starter for the soccer program. She helped the Bulldogs to three playoff appearances and her team won the League Championships in 2020. During her high school career, she also has given lacrosse goalkeeping a shot and will wrap up an internship with her local fire department before making the trip to CSU.

CHOSE CLEVELAND STATE BECAUSE: "The school provides great opportunities for my future. When I went down for my visit, I loved the campus and after getting to meet with the coaching staff and other student-athletes, I knew I would feel at home."

QUOTE FROM COACH: "The only reason that Elyse was still available this late in the recruiting cycle is because of an unfortunate injury that she picked up a while ago that took her off the field during most of the key evaluation period. Prior to her injury, and more importantly in her recovery and return to play after the injury, her ability to play at this level is clear. We first got the chance to see her in a very impressive highlight video where her strong command of the box and excellent shot-stopping abilities jumped off the screen. Then we got to see all of those strong qualities again in person at our Winter ID Camp and left us very excited to provide her with this opportunity to compete with what is now a very deep group of young goalkeepers on the roster. Elyse is thrilled at this opportunity to continue to grow her game and compete at this high level and she definitely has the commitment and drive to fit into what this group is demanding of each other every day."

TEHYA DAVE | PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA | FORWARD | NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

BIO: Dave is becoming a Viking after competing for North Catholic High School for the past four years. She was an All-Section honoree after her sophomore campaign and helped lead her school to the first district soccer championship in its history in 2019. The Trojans followed it up with another section championship and a second-place district finish in 2021. A team captain her senior season, Dave made the honor roll all four years of high school.

CHOSE CLEVELAND STATE BECAUSE: "Of the great opportunities it can provide for me as a marketing major and a women's soccer student-athlete."

QUOTE FROM COACH: "We have enjoyed watching Tehya's steady development for the last few years and are extremely excited to add her to this already excellent incoming freshman class. It is rare that an incoming freshman is immediately able to match the very high physical demands of the game at the Division I level, but Tehya has the tools to do that immediately. She has always been an impressive athlete on the field with a combination of speed, size, and strength that gives her a very high potential. What really excites Coach Carl and I is seeing her add to that special athleticism in the last year or so with continued growth in her cleanliness on the ball and speed of play now matching those physical tools. As we continue to watch her grow each time we get to see her play, the potential is definitely there to grow into the role of a very dynamic forward at the center of an attack. Knowing her as well as we do, she wants to be a great player and is excited to do the work to get there."

MADISON NORVILLE | OAKVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA | DEFENDER | GARTH WEBB SECONDARY SCHOOL

BIO: Norville joins the Vikings from Garth Webb Secondary, where she was a starter at center back for the program's soccer team. The Oakville, Ontario native was a two-sport student-athlete for the Chargers, as she also competed in basketball and won two district championships with the high school's team. Norville was also a four-year starter on her club soccer team and was a selection for the 2021 All Canadian FTF Canada Top-60 Girls All-Star Showcase. A standout on the pitch and in the classroom, Norville was an honor roll student for all four years at Garth Webb.

CHOSE CLEVELAND STATE BECAUSE: "The people, campus, education, team, overall environment and the coaching staff."

QUOTE FROM COACH: "The COVID-19 restrictions have had a massive impact on the recruiting landscape, but probably nowhere more so than in Canada, where they have still been shut down for much of the last year. Throughout all of those struggles the last few years, we have maintained a great connection with Madi and always hoped we would be able to make it work and get her here at Cleveland State! She will bring dynamic athleticism to a back line with excellent pace, is a very strong 1-on-1 defender, and has grown in her ability to pass and build up an attack from the back like our team does. Our expectation is for Madi to compete immediately for opportunities across the back line and her versatility will give us options to potentially find a few different roles for her to help us in. In addition to being an excellent player, staying connected and getting to know her very well over the last few years has made it clear she's also the type of ambitious, committed, and selfless person that our group continues to build around."
