Cleveland State Women's Soccer Concludes Regular Season With Fourth Straight Shutout

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Vikings closed out the 2021 regular season with a 1-0 shutout of Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday evening. Cleveland State extended their shutout streak to four consecutive and will turn their attention to the Horizon League Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 31.

THE GAME
Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne battled to a scoreless opening half with the home team holding a 5-2 edge in shots. Each team put two shots on target in the first half.

The Mastodons nearly scored the first goal of the game in the 68th minute off a corner kick as Rylee Vruggink's header was stopped on the goal line by a Vikings defender. Five minutes later, McKenna Donahue's shot hit the left post and rolled in for her first goal of the season as Cleveland State led 1-0.

The Green and White went into lockdown mode to record their fourth straight shutout, propelling them back into the league tournament.

The Vikings held a narrow 14-13 edge in shots and 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Cleveland State took eight corners on the evening while committing just two fouls.

Kyla Valaitis came up with five big saves on the evening, earning her fourth shutout of the year. Kathryn Ramicone finished with four shots, all of them going on frame.

Cleveland State earned a spot in the Horizon League Tournament and will play their first-round game on Sunday, Oct. 31.
