Cleveland State Women's Soccer Earns First Victory of the Season on Sunday

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State women's soccer program notched their first victory of the 2021 campaign on a hot and sunny afternoon in downtown Cleveland. The Green and White, who suffered a 2-0 loss against Kent State on Thursday night, bounced back in a big way scoring the game's first three goals. With the victory, Cleveland State now holds the edge in all-time meetings between the Vikes and Golden Griffins 7-6-0, including 5-2-0 at Krenzler Field.

THE GAME
Cleveland State jumped on the board early in Sunday's matinee match, as reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year, Kathryn Ramicone, peppered the back of the net just over four minutes into the game off of a Lina Feltovich assist. The Strongsville, Ohio, native registered her second goal of the day about 12 minutes later at the 16:30 mark of the opening half. Maia Ransom tallied the assist in Ramicone's second goal. Sunday's contest marked the sophomore's second career two-score outing (last time: March 30 at Robert Morris) and first career two-score, one-assist contest.

At the intermission of Sunday's match, the Vikings held a 2-0 lead.

Spring 2021 Horizon League First Team member Maddie Young found the back of the net about six minutes into the second frame of the contest, assisted by Ramicone, giving Cleveland State a 3-0 lead.

Canisius received their first goal of the day at the 63:57 mark, as it was an own-goal by Cleveland State.

Senior Grace Grant netted her first score of the season with 25 minutes left in regulation, putting the Green and White up 4-1.

Jen Romero tallied a goal for the Golden Griffins at the 76:15 mark off of a penalty kick, narrowing the gap of defeat, 4-2.

Mollie McGuire earned the nod at the goalkeeper position, recording two saves. Cleveland State out shot Canisius 7-3 and also registered three more corner kicks (5-2).

UP NEXT
Cleveland State will hit the road for a two-game trip, its longest of the season, beginnng on Thursday, August 26 at 5 p.m. as the Vikings are set to square off at Pittsburgh. Following Cleveland State's tilt against Pitt, the Green and White will travel to Akron for a Sunday matinee contest against the Zips. CSU won't take the pitch at the friendly confines of Krenzler Field until Thursday, Sept. 2 against Miami of Ohio at 6 p.m.
