Cleveland State Falls to Kent State in Season Opener

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State women's soccer team fell to local rival Kent State on Thursday night in its season opener, 2-0. A win on Thursday would have given the Vikings their first season-opening win since a 2018 2-1 defeat over Howard.

THE GAME
The Golden Flashes struck early in the match, scoring their first goal 7:12 into the tilt. Cameron Shedenhelm found the back of the net, while Lauryn Arruda tallied the assist.

Arruda played a role in both of Kent State's scoring efforts, as she assisted Alisa Arthur at the 63:23 mark of the second half.

The Green and White were unable to answer Kent State's two goals, as the Vikes only saw three shots the entire match (Grace Krosky, Kathryn Ramicone, Christina Trickett).

Freshman goalkeeper Kyla Valaitis earned the start for Cleveland State, recording four saves on the day.

The Golden Flashes earned four yellow cards during the contest, while the Vikings did not receive any cards. Cleveland State only committed six fouls on the evening, opposed to Kent State's 14. The Golden Flashes narrowly held a corner kick advantage (5-4), while also holding an 8-3 shot advantage.

UP NEXT
Cleveland State will be back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Canisius at Krenzler Field. The Vikes and Golden Griffins are tied 6-6-0 all-time, although Cleveland State holds a 4-2-0 advantage at home. Sunday's matinee match will be streamed on an ESPN streaming platform.
